March 18, 2011. Swine flu kills one and infects 12 others in Merida, Venezuela

Venezuelan health officials believe swine flu killed one person, according to reports on March 18th. Some 12 others have been diagnosed with the virus in Merida state. Health authorities believe they have isolated the cases and have been administering vaccines. All of the patients are adults and are receiving treatment at home, although one has been hospitalized. Health officials say they are taking measures to prevent the illness from spreading.

In 2009, health officials in Venezuela attributed dozens of deaths to swine flu.
