June 3, 2009. Chilean Health Authorities Confirm First Swine Flu Death

On 2 June 2009 authorities confirmed the first death in Chile from the A/H1N1 (swine flu) virus. It is also the first death in South America attributed to the virus, which has killed 118 people worldwide. The deceased, a 37-year-old male, suffered acute respiratory failure in a hospital in Puerto Montt, a port city in southern Chile located approximately 621 mi/1,000 km south of Santiago, the capital. Chile has 313 confirmed A/H1N1 cases, the highest number in South America.
