The Caribbean nation continued to recover from the aftermath Hurricane Sandy, which left at least 51 people dead and several more still missing, in international news agency reported on October 28th. Though substantial damage was sustained across the island, the provinces of Sud, Sud-est, Grand Anse, Nippes, and Ouest were hit hardest, prompting government officials to maintain a state of maximum alert in these provinces. Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe announced that US$6 million would be set aside by the government to address the country's immediate needs after the storm, and that humanitarian aid was arriving from Venezuela. Haiti, still suffering the effects of its massive January 2010 earthquake, suffered the most damage and the highest death toll among its Caribbean neighbors, who reportedly saw 14 deaths as a result of the category two hurricane.
