Hurricane Sandy, confirmed to have taken 21 lives as it passed over Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, and the Bahamas, was expected to strike the east coast of the United States, the National Hurricane Center reported on October 26th. Eleven deaths were reported in Cuba as a result of falling trees and collapsing buildings, despite the islands well-rehearsed hurricane preparations; while nine deaths were reported in Haiti, a country that suffers from weak infrastructure. An elderly man was killed in Jamaica when a boulder fell on his home. Though Sandy has been downgraded to a category one hurricane, the Florida coastline is reportedly under a storm warning.
