At least 50 people were killed and 150 others injured in a series of earthquakes that struck southwestern China's Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, Chinese state-controlled media said on September 7th. The largest earthquake struck at 11:19 Beijing time or 03:19 GMT and registered 5.6 on the Richter scale according to the US Geological Survey. The earthquake affected mostly mountainous areas and sparked landslides. Most of the deaths were reportedly recorded in Yunnan province's Yiliang county. No deaths were reported in Guizhou as of September 7th. At least 100,000 people were evacuated and more than 20,000 homes damaged in both provinces. Reports indicated the the earthquake disrupted mobile and regular phone service in the region.
