August 23, 2012. Tropical Storm Isaac strikes eastern Caribbean, heads for Hispanola

Tropical Storm Isaac headed towards the island of Hispanola - home to the Dominican Republic and Haiti - on August 23rd after it poured heavy rains on the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean earlier that week, reports indicated. No major damage was reported in the eastern Caribbean, although an elderly woman died in an accident as she prepared her home for the storm in Puerto Rico; the storm is expected to bring heavy rains to Puerto Rico on August 23rd. Isaac is expected to gain strength before it strikes Hispanola; it is predicted to move towards Cuba and Florida in the rest of the week. School closures and business closures were reported on a number of islands in the eastern Caribbean, including Dominica, US Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. The US Coast Guard closed all ports on Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, with officials in the Dominican Republic banning boats from entering its waters. The storm brought heavy rains to Dominica, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. A number of airlines cancelled flights to Caribbean destinations.
