Iranian officials raised the death toll from the August 11th twin earthquakes in northwestern Iran to 306 people killed on August 13th after calling off the search for survivors and increasing relief efforts for those affected. Officials halted search and rescue efforts after most local residents were accounted for. Some reports, however, suggest some are still missing. The first earthquake, a magnitude 6.4 quake, struck at 17:23 local time on August 11th near Tabriz. The second, a 6.3 quake, struck the same area some 11 minutes later. More than 3,000 people were injured in the earthquakes, while some 20 villages in mountainous areas were completely destroyed.
