May 30, 2012. Death toll from Italian earthquake rises to 17, aftershocks reported

The death toll from the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck northern Italy's Emilia Romagna region on May 29th reached 17 on May 30th, with the number of injured persons at 350, reports indicated. The latest victim was found in Medolla, some 45km (27 miles) northwest of Bologna. The first quake in the region struck on May 20th and killed seven people and left thousands homeless. The number of homeless people from both earthquakes reached 14,000. The Italian government deployed government troops and pledged to restore normal life as soon as possible. The towns of Mirandola, Medolla, and Cavezzo were closest to the epicenter of the earthquake, although residents of Milan and Bologna could feel the vibration.
