A year after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands, sparked a nuclear power plant crisis, and caused untold damage, Japanese scientists warned that Tokyo could be hit by another mega-earthquake, reports indicated on March 5th. Officials reported that Greater Tokyo, a densely-populated area of 35 million people, witnessed a threefold increase in tectonic activity since the magnitude-9.0 earthquake of March 2011. The University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Institute said the city had a 50% of suffering a major earthquake in the next four years. While the city is one of the most earthquake-proofed places in the world, a powerful earthquake with an epicenter in the Greater Tokyo could kill thousands.
