Peruvian authorities said on October 29th that 134 homes were destroyed and 103 people injured during a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck just off the central coast one day earlier. There were no deaths and most of the homes that collapsed were of adobe. Two adobe churches were also seriously damaged, including the 18th century cathedral of the provincial capital Ica. The earthquake sent people running panicked into the streets in cities where a 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck in 2007, killing 600 people.
Two army engineering battalions are joining police in supporting residents who lost homes or had property damage. Some nine aftershocks were reported on October 29th, the most significant had a 5.5 magnitude.
