The death toll in the October 23rd earthquake rose to 523 on October 27th, with more than 1,650 people injured and some 185 rescued alive, reports indicated. Rains and heavy snow hindered rescue efforts and made life more difficult for the thousands of people made homeless. People in the hardest-hit town of Ercis formed long lines to try and get hold of basic supplies and tents. Some critics accused the ruling AK party of handing out aid to the families of public servants and police officers, while ignoring ordinary people.
