August 2, 2011. At least three killed by heavy rains; seven injured by earthquake in Japan

At least three people were killed when heavy rains lashed northeastern Japan on July 31st, with the death toll highest in Niigata, reports indicated. Three other people went missing in Niigata and Fukushima. Thousands remained in shelters and evacuation centers to avoid floods and heavy rain. The Niigata government ordered more than 60,000 people to flee their homes. At least 1,020 people were sheltered in Fukushima as of July 31st, while some 2,278 homes were flooded.

In other news, at least seven people were injured when a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off Fukushima prefecture on July 31st.
