July 11, 2011. Earthquake triggers tsunami alert in Japan

A magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale earthquake struck on July 9th the same area devastated by the March 2011 earthquake but triggered only a minor tsunami, reports indicated. Officials issued and then withdrew a tsunami alert; the tsunami that struck Iwate prefecture only measured 10cm (four inches) in height. During the alert, officials evacuated the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, while residents of coastal areas were instructed to move to higher grounds. Officials reported no damages or injuries in the earthquake, with airports operating normally. The Japanese Meteorological Agency initially feared a 50cm (20in) tsunami across Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures.
