A magnitude-7.6 earthquake triggered tsunami alerts in New Zealand and Tonga on July 7th but officials canceled the warnings after the quake proved less damaging than predicted, reports indicated. While the earthquake generated waves of up to one meter (3.4ft) near the epicenter, it did not have a significant effect on neighboring countries. A few schools and businesses were closed on Tonga on July 7th as residents were evacuated to higher ground.
