New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said the June 13th tremors struck the same areas of Christchurch devastated in the February 2011 earthquake, confirming fears that homes would have to be abandoned. Key said he now had "a reasonably clear picture about what land won't be able to rebuild on." He earlier said that some 10,000 homes would be destroyed. Recovery and reconstruction costs are estimated to total some NZ$15 billion. The latest tremors - the strongest of which was 6.0 in magnitude - left some 50,000 people without power and water on the night of June 13-14th. Officials said that some 75 buildings previously thought safe were condemned after the tremors, while several other buildings collapsed completely. More than 40 people were injured in the tremor, while an elderly person fell and died from head injuries.
