A series of earthquakes - the most powerful of which reached a magnitude of 6.0 - struck South Island's Christchurch on June 13th, leaving some 50,000 people without power, reports indicated. Officials evacuated shopping centers, office blocks, and the Christchurch airport during the most powerful tremor. Since the February 2011 earthquake that killed 181 people, some 50,000 former residents of Christchurch relocated to other parts of New Zealand or Australia. Officials called on residents to stay off the roads while police and specialists verified their safety; schools were to be closed on June 14th.
