Two significant aftershocks - one of magnitude-5.0 - struck South Island's Christchurch on June 6th, closing some stores but causing no major damage, reports indicated. The aftershocks, however, did increase fears in the city, which lost 181 people in a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in February 2011. The magnitude 5.0 aftershock was the most powerful recorded since the February 2011 earthquake.
