The Japanese government underestimated the danger posed by tsunami striking a nuclear power plant, while its response to the ensuing nuclear crisis was "exemplary," the United Nations (UN) nuclear energy agency said on June 1st. The announcement came as three opposition parties submitted a no-confidence vote against Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). Among those backing the measure was former DPJ prime minister Naoto Kan. If the measure survives a vote on June 2nd, Kan would be forced to resign and/or call a snap election. The March 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant crisis killed at least 15,281 people, left over 8,492 missing, and injured 5,363 others.
