At least eight people were killed and 120 injured when a magnitude-5.2 earthquake shook Lorca on May 11th. The earthquake caused several buildings to collapse. The strong quake was recorded at 6:45pm local time and a few hours later a 4.4 magnitude aftershock was reported. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero ordered the Spanish military's emergency response unit, the UME, to mobilize in support of rescue and aid efforts. Hundreds of people have queued for food aid after thousands slept on the street overnight, unable to return to their damaged homes. Officials say 90,000 residents are waiting for housing inspectors to give them the green light to reenter buildings.
