Radioactivity levels in the Pacific Ocean seabed some 15km (nine miles) from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant surged since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that sparked the crisis, reports indicated on May 4th. Officials collected samples of soil registering 1,400 becquerels of radioactive cesium-137 per kilo, some 600 times higher than the maximum 2.3 becquerels per kilo previously recorded off the plant.
