May 4, 2011. Workers to enter crippled reactor in Japan; compensation estimated at US$49 billion

SOURCE:Altegrity Risk International

Engineers prepared on May 3rd to send workers inside the reactor No. 1 at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor for the first time since an earthquake and tsunami crippled the plant in March 2011, local media said. The firm managing the plant said it started work to install a ventilation system to clean the air inside the reactor. Once that is set up, the firm planned to send crews in to launch efforts to bring the entire plant to a cold shutdown.

In other news, the Japanese government estimated on May 3rd that compensation for damages resulting from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis could reach four trillion yen (US$49 billion). Half the money would reportedly come from the operator of the plant, with the rest coming from other electricity companies.
