Violent demonstrations spread across Haiti on April 27th as protesters blocked roads and damaged cars in Port-au-Prince, destroyed a radio station and set fire to a hospital, demanding that the results of the legislative elections last month be checked for irregularities. In Cite Soleil district in Port-au-Prince, protesters threw stones at traffic and damaged four vehicles. Some of the most violent demonstrations were reported in Carice, where the local radio station was destroyed. In Belladere, protesters attacked the office of the Dominican Republic's consular mission and set a hospital on fire, killing two people. Meanwhile, houses were set on fire by protesters in Central Plateu region.
The U.S. Embassy and UN officials raised concern over the election results after Haiti's ruling Unity Party won 46 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and president-elect Martelly's Farmers' Response Party got three seats. Early tallies showed the ruling party with significantly fewer votes.
