Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the port town of Minamisanriku, where more than 1,350 people were killed or left missing by the devastating March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, local media said on April 27th. The tsunami also destroyed more than 3,800 homes in the town, forcing thousands into refugee shelters. The visit by the Imperial couple marked their first trip to the region worst affected by the disaster. The latest figures from the National Police Agency placed the disaster's death toll at 14,517, with another 11,432 missing.
In other news, officials at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant said they were injecting water into the No. 1 reactor at the plan to determine if there are any leaks before fully flooding the containment vessel in a procedure called water entombment. Officials also said they would be fixing leaks at No. 2 reactor before pumping water into it.
