Japanese police launched a search for the bodies of victims of the March 11th earthquake and tsunami within a 10km zone around the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on April 14th, reports indicated. Up to 1,000 bodies are believed to be in the area, but officials postponed retrieval efforts due to radiation fears. More than 300 policemen in protective gear were dispatched to search for the bodies, with officials claiming that declining radioactive levels near the plant made the search possible. The earthquake and tsunami death toll reached 13,456 on April 14th, with another 14,851 listed as missing. More than 150,000 people were made homeless by the disaster.
