Officials at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant stopped the leak of highly radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean, reports indicated on April 6th. Engineers reportedly injected chemical agents to solidify soil near a cracked concrete pit at reactor no. 2 and discharged some 11,500 tons of less contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean so more radioactive water could be stored. While officials said the water dump posed no significant threat to human health, local fishermen accused the government of "utterly outrageous" action.
A new problem, however, surfaced at reactor no. 1, where a build up of hydrogen gas could spark an explosion; officials were attempting to pump in nitrogen gas to prevent a blast.
