United Nations peacekeeping forces stepped up security across Haiti on April 4th in order to keep the peace ahead of the announcement of presidential and legislative runoff election preliminary results. The presidential runoff pitted former first lady and longtime opposition leader Mirlande Manigat against Michel Martelly, a well-known singer. UN police and the military could be seen patrolling major cities such as Cap-Haitien, Les Ceyes, and Port-au-Prince. Residents fearful of looming violence reported stocked up on groceries and some business owners boarded up windows. Experts say violence is particularly likely if Manigat is deemed the winner. The final results will be announced on April 16th, allowing time for losing candidates to appeal.
