The president of Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council issued a statement on March 29th to notify the public that officials found a high level of fraud and irregularities at the tabulation center in Port-au-Prince that would require officials to delay the release of preliminary results from the presidential election. Due to the discovery, lawyers have been required to adopt more stringent verification measures, which is causing a delay. Preliminary results are now expected to be released on April 4th and final results April 16th.
International monitors observing the counting process, meanwhile, praised Haiti's March 20th presidential runoff, saying it was in sharp contrast to the November 28th first round that was marred by disorganization and allegations of fraud.
