About 25 embassies temporarily closed their doors in Tokyo due to the nuclear emergency sparked by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto said on March 23rd. As of March 22nd, eight of the embassies transferred their functions outside Tokyo or Japan, with the rest keeping their staff at home and arranging work day by day. Embassies affected include those of Angola, Bahrain, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Croatia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Kenya, Kosovo, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Panama, and Switzerland. Other diplomatic missions, like that of the United States, authorized embassy family members to leave Japan or relocate westward.
