The March 11th earthquake and tsunami that ravaged much of northeastern Honshu Island and sparked a nuclear power plant crisis resulted in losses of between US$12 and US$25 billion, a risk assessment firm consulted by Paris-based media said on March 16th. The risk assessment, however, did not account damages incurred by the ongoing nuclear crisis. Between US$2.0 and US$4.0 billion of the inured losses are expected to be borne by the government's Japanese Earthquake Reinsurance Pool.
