March 16, 2011. Update from Tokyo Regarding Iodine Availability in Japan
| SOURCE: | HTH Worldwide |
Reports from HTH Worldwide's Regional Physician Advisor (RPA) in Tokyo confirm that Japan has provided 230,000 units of stable iodine to evacuation centers as a precautionary measure. Iodine can be used to help protect again thyroid cancer in the case of radioactive exposure. The Japanese government is controlling the distribution of the iodine; private doctors do not have access to the medication. It is unclear how available the iodine will be to expatriates.
The RPA also advised that Synthroid, a medication that is used to treat thyroid disorders, is in extremely limited supply in Japan, as the only manufacturing plant in Japan was damaged in the earthquake.
