Strong winds and heavy dust storms hampered recovery work and the search for bodies in Christchurch on March 2nd, local media said. Police Superintendent Dave Cliff warned the weather condition and serious damage may prevent the recovery of all the dead bodies. The death toll from the magnitude 6.3 earthquake reached 160 on May 2nd, although Cliff said it could reach 240. Christchurch officials are hard pressed to clear debris and restore the city's downtown area to prevent population flight to other areas of New Zealand.
