New Zealand held a two-minute silence on March 1st at 12:51 local time (23:51 GMT) to mark a devastating earthquake in Christchurch, with the death toll reaching 154 people, although dozens remain missing, reports indicated. Rescue operations continued a week after the earthquake, although workers found no survivors since February 23rd. The government pledged NZ$120 in initial subsidies, as well as a thorough investigation into why some buildings collapsed so quickly during the earthquake.
