A number of powerful aftershocks from a September 2010 earthquake struck South Island's Christchurch on December 25th, damaging buildings, temporarily cutting power, and forcing officials to evacuate a large shopping center. The most powerful tremor reached 4.9 magnitude, with its impact magnified as it struck near the town center. The city was hit in September 2010 by a magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale earthquake. Correspondents for a London-based news outlet claimed it was a stroke of luck that no injuries were reported.
