December 22, 2010. Powerful earthquake in Japan prompts brief tsunami alert

A strong earthquake prompted a brief tsunami alert on December 22nd, although the 7.4 magnitude quake only prompted a mild swelling of waves. There were no immediate reports of damage from the quake, which strike some 130km (80 miles) off the southern coast of Chichi Island in the Pacific Ocean but could be felt in Tokyo. Originally, an alert for a tsunami of up to 2 meters (6 feet) was issued, prompting scores of residents to evacuate to community centers and school buildings.
