A group of 11 U.S. missionaries were attacked by angry Haitian protesters as they attempted to leave Cap-Haitien during a bout of unrest that has led to the death of three protesters over the past several days, according to reports on November 18th. The group of missionaries reportedly holed themselves up inside a hotel room in the city when recent protests erupted, but decided to cut their trip short and leave the area on November 17th. While on a bus heading out of Cap-Haitien and towards the Dominican Republic, a man with a machete stopped the bus, and began breaking windows. The driver reportedly attempted to back up, but two burning vehicles were put behind the missionaries' bus, barricading them on the road. Protesters began hurling rocks at the bus and spraying oil. Demonstrators dragged a Haitian employee of the bus company out of the vehicle and began beating him. The driver maneuvered the bus onto the sidewalk and lurched the vehicle forward to a nearby UN peacekeeping base, where the foreign nationals took refuge.
