November 11, 2010. Cholera toll rises in Haiti, authorities warn that hundreds of thousands will be infected in next year

SOURCE:Altegrity Risk International

The death toll from cholera across Haiti has risen to 644, with aid workers fighting to contain the spread of the disease in the capital city. More than 10,000 have been infected over the past month. At least 170 people have now been hospitalized in Port-au-Prince. Doctors in Port-au-Prince say they are alarmed as the speed at which new cases are emerging and a senior health ministry official says the epidemic is now a "matter of national security." Health officials expect that some 270,000 Haitians will be infected in the next six to twelve months and warn that the risk of the disease spreading into neighboring Dominican Republic is high.
