Angry earthquake survivors disrupted an attempted evacuation of a resettlement camp on November 4th as Tropical Storm Tomas bore down on Haiti. The effort to move some 3,000 people from Corail, an exposed camp outside Port-au-Prince, was obstructed by camp dwellers worried that authorities were trying to permanently move them out. More than 100 youths broke tables set up by aid workers to process the evacuees from the tent and tarpaulin camp. Aid workers say the camp's location at the confluence of several streams makes it vulnerable to flooding.
Early on November 5th, the storm strengthened to become a hurricane and dumped a deluge over much of the country. At least one death has already been attributed to the poor weather conditions. Several U.S. airlines have canceled flights to Port-au-Prince and authorities have warned that there is an elevated risk of flooding and landslides.
