U.S. health authorities said on November 2nd that the cholera strain that has killed more than 330 people in Haiti closely resembles a South Asian strain, strengthening suspicions that the disease may have been brought to the country by newly arrived UN peacekeepers from Nepal. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control found that Haitian cholera patients had all been infected with the same strain and it was unlikely to have originated in Haiti. Prior to the recent outbreak, cholera had not been detected in Haiti in several decades; however, the disease is endemic in Nepal.
