Only an estimated 2% of debris from the January 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince has been cleared, according to reports on September 13th. Reports indicated that the quake left some 33 million cubic yards of debris in the capital city. Government officials continue to say that rubble removal is a top priority so that the country can rebuild and those made homeless can be resettled. Reports say there are few sites to dump the rubble, little heavy equipment to move the rubble, and poor records system makes it hard for the government to determine property ownership, all contributing to the poor movement of debris. Additionally, there is not one person within the government that is in charge of clearing the rubble.
