A magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale tremor shook the Southern Island city of Christchurch on September 8th, some three days after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake caused significant damage in the region, reports indicated. The tremor cut power, further damaged buildings, and sparked panic, with officials claiming it caused significant damage because of its shallow depth. Officials extended a state of emergency for the city until September 15th. No fatalities were reported in the September 5th earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.
