Residents from the region around L'Aquila that struck by a major earthquake in 2009 scuffled with police at a demonstration in Rome on July 7th. Several thousand people attended the rally, complaining that they had not received enough help from the government after the disaster. At least two people were injured when demonstrators pushed up against police cordons near the office of Prime Minster Silvio Berlusconi in central Rome. Most residents whose homes were destroyed have been given temporary housing, but they have complained that the construction of new homes and the historic city center has been too slow. According to authorities, it could take up to 10 years for life in the area to return to normal.
