Authorities are on alert after a strong 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale earthquake hit Peru's Tacna department, which borders Chile, on May 6th. Authorities say electricity and telephone services have been cut and schools suspended for 24 hours while they assess damages. Several landslides toppled roadways connecting the capital with Tarata and Candarave.
