A leading official in the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture warned on April 23rd that outbreaks of animal-to-human diseases, such as rabies and anthrax, among the survivors of the Qinghai province earthquake are one of the key concerns of rescue workers, as relief efforts turn toward preventing disease outbreaks and providing improved shelter. The Qinghai province is home to a variety of communicable diseases, including bubonic plague which may have originated in the region.
