China held a national day of mourning on April 21st with flags flying at half mast across the country and public entertainment venues closing their doors or curtailing their activities to remember the more than 2,060 people killed by a magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale earthquake in Qinghai province. Some 175 others are still missing after the quake. Newspapers and entertainment television stations across China appeared in black, while cinemas, karaoke bars, and Internet cafes closed. Many websites followed suit while others turned their mastheads black or gray. Some reports indicated that officials have instructed Tibetan monks and nuns working alongside rescue workers in Qinghai to leave the affected area, with the Tibetan plateau previously the site of civil unrest.
