A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck some 10km (six miles) southwest of the West Australian town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder on April 19th, collapsing several roofs, damaging hotel balconies, and leading officials to evacuate mines, schools, and hospitals in Australia's major gold-mining region. The quake injured at least two people, including a teenage girl. Officials closed and evacuated more than 50 mines in the region. The quake was the strongest to hit the region in 50 years.
