March 8, 2010. Earthquake in eastern Turkey kills 57

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey on March 8th, killing at least 57 people. The earthquake centered on the village of Basyurt in Elazig province and nearly destroyed the nearby village of Okcular, where the majority of homes are made from mud brick. At least 50 people were injured, some in the panic following the quake, when people jumped from windows and balconies. The quake was felt in the nearby provinces of Tunceli, Bingol, and Diyarbakir. The temblor was followed by over 40 aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.5.
