At least 96 people were injured after a magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale earthquake struck southern Taiwan, damaging rail services, farm houses, and temporarily cutting electricity to half a million homes in and around Taipei, reports indicated. A fire at a Shanshan textile factory reportedly caused at least NT$100 million (US$3.1 million) in damages, while some 99 schools reported an estimated NT$40 million (US$1.3 million) in damages. The Southern Taiwan Science Park, a key high-tech export industry center on the Island, temporary shut down during the earthquake.
