A magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale earthquake struck about 70km (44 miles) from the southern city of Kaohsiung on March 4th, damaging buildings, disrupting power supplies to Taipei, and forcing officials to suspend high speed rail services, reports indicated. Although officials reported no deaths, the earthquake reportedly injured several and sparked fires, including one at a textile factory in Tainan city. Officials in Kaohsiung City suspended subway services and claimed that some temporary housing collapsed. The government mobilized soldiers to monitor the situation and assist in rescue efforts.
