A curfew in Concepcion was extended on March 2nd in an effort to restore order in one of Chile's worst affected areas only days after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck the country. The curfew will begin one hour earlier, at 8pm local time and will last until noon. Authorities say despite the deployment of thousands of troops, looting, raping, and violent crime has been a problem in the region. Power outages and a water and food shortages have exacerbated the problem, with grocery stores frequently being looted.
Authorities are continuing to assess damages and casualties from the disaster, with new reports indicating that the tsunami that hit the country's coast caused significant damage. In Pelluhue, authorities say three waves surging 200 meters hit the coast and dragged a bus carrying some 40 retirees into the water. The current death toll is estimated at 723 with millions of people affected by the quake.
