A damaged Haitian supermarket collapsed in Port-au-Prince on February 9th as several people were inside. Authorities say the building was damaged during the January 12th earthquake and rescuers were forced to use heavy-duty equipment to cut through tangled steel and concrete to reach eight people trapped inside. The collapse occurred as rescuers were attempting to recover bodies of people trapped inside during the original earthquake and several looters were reportedly looking for food.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the earthquake was raised to 230,000, up from a previous estimate of 212,000. Authorities are continuing to recover bodies from collapsed buildings and the latest figure is not believed to include those who were buried by private funeral homes in private cemeteries or those buried by their own families.
